Improving student writing skills is a major focus in today’s schools. These sessions explore and demonstrate the traits of good writing and how using analytical assessment can raise student achievement. Because many teachers are not actually prepared to teach writing in their classrooms, these sessions support teachers in becoming mentors and coaches, not just editors, and help them see the importance of their modeling their own writing for the students. Interviews with university faculty and authors who have become mentors themselves bring to light the role of the writing teacher in the 21st century. Classroom visits with master teachers demonstrating focus lessons and conferencing with students help illustrate the content of the sessions.
