These are introductory sessions for using the 6 Traits analytical assessment rubric in the elementary classroom. Improving student writing skills at all levels is a major focus in today's schools. Teachers explore strategies for using the 6 Traits rubric in the elementary classroom (grades 3-5). Reading the text, watching teachers implementing the traits, and creating lessons are the focus. Because many teachers are not actually prepared to teach writing in their classrooms, these sessions support teachers in becoming mentors and coaches, not just editors, and help students become writers. Interviews with Dr. Ruth Culham, one of the creators of the 6 1 Traits of writing rubric and author of the book for this course, bring to light the role of the writing teacher in the 21st century. Classroom visits with master teachers demonstrating focus lessons and conferencing with students help illustrate the content of the sessions.
